AT&T has plans to expand 5G network and launch 15 5G-enabled devices this year
Ever since Verizon talked about its 5G plans for 2020 at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the public has been pretty excited to see what’s in store for the consumer market. So when AT&T took the stage yesterday, it also shared some of its 5G plans in store for the year ahead.
Their ultimate goal is to be able to provide 5G service to at least 200 million people eventually. Unfortunately, it was only able to flip the low-band 5G switch in 10 cities last month. Despite this, they are aiming to do their best to make their goal happen “by the summer.”
AT&T’s 5G service primarily uses low-band spectrum as a foundation for the next-gen network rollout throughout the country. With the latter, AT&T will be able to deploy technology faster, using a signal that is able to penetrate through walls easily. And as a result, it will be able to cover more area than the millimeter waves. As for its disadvantage, the speed may deliver only a marginal improvement over the current download numbers that 4G LTE networks have provided.
As a whole, AT&T is currently supplying “standard” 5G service to 19 markets. But it states that it has launched its mmWave-based 5G+ network in “parts of 35 cities.”
In regards to the 5G-capable devices it intends to launch this year, the wireless provider promises that they will be releasing 15 new smartphones under the “Now Network.” The Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G will only be one of them. Most of the unnamed devices that AT&T has promised will have 5G and 5G+ support, unlike the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G that only has low-band 5G signal.
Things are looking good for the wireless provider this year.
