Google Unveils Its Android Excellence Program For Google Play Apps
Some may remember that not too long ago, Apple had launched a completely overhauled App Store that now focuses more on editorial aspects, such as providing stories about the mobile apps available, quick tips and tutorials, and even interviews with creators and developers, among many others. Showing that it too can play that game, Google also recently unveiled its own Android Excellence program, which aims to boost editorial control on app store, Google Play.
Basically, the Android Excellence program allows editors in Google Play to highlight the best mobile apps and game titles available for Android users. Similar to how Apple highlights new iOS features by way of its Editor’s Choice recommendations, Google’s program will also look to create collections of apps that exude top quality, or embody the types of apps that Google wants app creators to build more of.
This program makes a lot of sense for Google. The tech giant has always valued quality and excellence in each of its brands and products. Thus, its new Android Excellence program will try to pick the cream of the crop -- in other words, the mobile apps that feature great design, deliver high quality performance, allow for device optimization, and overall, create awesome user experiences when operated on Android powered smartphones and tablet devices.
As for the collections generated by the Android Excellence program, they will be sorted into two general categories -- namely, apps and games. Users can see the featured titles via a redesigned Editors’ Choice section in the Play Store, where Google will also be showcasing other app and game reviews provided by its own editorial crew.
It bears noting that Google has decided to update its Android Excellence collections on a quarterly basis. This schedule is certainly far less frequent than what Apple’s revamped App Store (which will be rolled out together with the deployment of iOS 11 some time in fall later this year) will be doing. Some may argue that Apple’s ever changing app suggestions will foster better app discovery. But on the side of the app creators, Google’s approach allows for more (or more accurately, longer) exposure, especially for those whose apps are featured in the collections in any given three month period.
Also, apart from the Editor’s Choice section and recommended apps, Google is also looking to continue hosting its Google Play Awards at its yearly I/O developer conference in order to give recognition to top apps and games across various app categories.
