T-Mobile Makes History with First Satellite-Delivered Emergency Alert
As technology continues to evolve in the U.S., dead zones may soon become a thing of the past—at least for T-Mobile.
Earlier this week, T-Mobile announced a major breakthrough: successfully sending and receiving a Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) using Starlink satellites equipped with direct satellite-to-smartphone capabilities. This marks a historic first for the U.S., where an emergency alert has been transmitted via satellite.
At 5:13 PM on Thursday, September 5, a test alert for a hypothetical evacuation was sent 217 miles into space to one of over 175 Starlink satellites in orbit. The satellite then broadcasted the alert to the designated geographic area. A T-Mobile smartphone received the notification in just seconds, delivered through Starlink’s low-earth orbit satellite system.
This technology means that soon, everyone in the U.S. will be able to receive emergency alerts, even during hurricanes, tornadoes, or wildfires—no matter where they are. And the best part? It won’t be limited to T-Mobile customers—anyone, regardless of their provider, will be able to receive these life-saving alerts.
