AT&T has announced that it will now be offering up to $450 in credit to former T-Mobile subscribers who switch from T-Mobile to AT&T. For a limited time, T-Mobile customers who switch to AT&T and trade in their phones will receive a $200 per line credit for switching to AT&T and buy a phone and plan with AT&T Next, buy a smartphone at full retail price, or bring their own smartphone that they already own. (AT&T Next is a smartphone financing plan that allows customers to get the phone at a lower upfront cost, and pay down the cost of the phone over 24 months.)

Last week, AT&T announced a new cell phone plan payment structure for their Mobile Share plans that allows customers to use AT&T's service without a contract. This move was probably made because of the increasing competition by T-Mobile's decision to revert to a 100% no contract model.
Anyone is eligible for the new no contract AT&T plans, so long as they are prepared to pay full price for their device (since it is a no contract plan, the device is unsubsidized), or if they bring their own phone.

Today, Sprint announced an overhaul of its cell phone plan offerings. In order to remain competitive with AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile, Sprint scrapped many of their old plans and replaced them with two simple options: the Unlimited My Way Plan and the Unlimited All-In Plan.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) today approved the merger of Sprint and Nextel. The merged company will be the 3rd largest national wireless company, behind Cingular and Verizon, and ahead of T-Mobile.
This is the 2nd major merger in wireless in the last year or so, coming on the heels of the Cingular acquisition of AT&T Wireless. Another merger, with Alltel taking over Western Wireless, recently closed, creating a large carrier covering a good number of smaller and rural locations.

Cingular's rate plans changed on June 1st... they got rid of most (or all, we haven't figured it out yet) of their regional plans, while making slight modifications to their national plans.
On the national side, Cingular has lined up almost exactly with Verizon, taking a slight premium to the rest of the carriers. The biggest difference is that Cingular continues to offer rollover.
On the family plan side, Cingular increased the additional line charge from $9.99 to $14.99/line.

If you haven't read our Guide to Buying a Cell Phone and Plan, what are you waiting for? If you have, you know that one of the things we harp on in there are the disadvantages of signing a two year contract. However, one year contracts are pretty hard to find these days, except with T-Mobile, where they are standard.
