A Cell Phone & Plan for Seniors

We are often asked about phones that are more accessible; the most common request is for an easy-to-use phone with larger keys and a display with larger fonts. Unfortunately, there haven’t been that many good solutions, as the focus of the carriers in the last couple years has been more sophisticated, ever-smaller devices that support various data services.

Free 411

AT&T has rolled out its free directory assistance nationwide, which can save you upwards of $1.50 per request.   Call 800.935.5697 from your home/cell phone.  The service is advertiser-supported, so expect to listen to an ad relevant to your number request before actually getting the number.

Verizon Modifies Prepaid Offerings

Verizon Wireless has expanded its INpulse prepaid plan, and now offers three different varieties. Note that all the plans discussed below come with free mobile-to-mobile calling to all other Verizon Wireless subscribers. Also note that text message pricing is per message, whether received or sent.  Night calling referred to below is from 9PM to 6AM

How Big is your Cell Phone Company?

Ever wonder how many subscribers your cell phone company has? We didn't think so, but we'll tell you anyway. These numbers are from 3Q financial report filings.

Disney Mobile Shutting Down

Like its sister company, Mobile ESPN, Walt Disney's attempt at building a cell phone company has failed. Disney Mobile will cease operations at the end of the year, with voice, messaging and Family Center services ending at that time. Existing Disney Mobile customers can cancel service before that, without termination penalty, as long as their bills are paid in full. It looks like there will also be some sort of reimbursement program for the phones and accessories customers bought, although details aren't yet available.

Want 10% Back on your AT&T Wireless Bill?

In one of our prior posts, we spoke about the free cell phone insurance benefit available with the new AT & T Universal Savings & Reward Card. That feature applies regardless of carrier.

However, for AT&T and former Cingular customers, there is an even better benefit. The card will reimburse you up to 10% of the cost of AT&T products and services, including your wireless phone bill, for 12 months; 5% thereafter.

Free Cell Phone Insurance

The recently upgraded AT&T Universal Savings & Reward Card offers up to $100 reimbursement (after a $50 deductible) if your cell phone (any carrier) is lost or stolen. This won’t fully cover you if you have an expensive phone, but it could be useful for many of us. This benefit comes at no cost when you get the Card. Some restrictions apply; see the offer for full details.

The AT&T Universal card has no annual fee and offers a 0% introductory APR on balance transfers for 12 months.

Cutting the Cord

According to Forrester Research, approximately 8% of cell phone households had given up their landline phone service and gone totally wireless as of the end of 2005, compared to 5% at the end of 2004. The study indicated there would be 2x that amount within 3 years.

Interestingly, this phenomenon, which used to be mostly associated with younger people, is starting to move up the age ranks. In this study, rapid growth in cutting the cord was seen in the 35-44 age group.

The 411 on Wireless Directory Assistance

The wireless industry is moving ahead with plans for directory assistance for cell phone numbers. Given that there are now more wireless lines than landline, this seems like a good idea. Offsetting this, of course, is the risk of telemarketing calls, particularly annoying on cell phones since the mobile party (you) is paying for the (probably) unwanted telemarketing call.
