Survey: Amazon Echo Users Likely To Be On iOS Than On Android

Survey: Amazon Echo Users Likely To Be On iOS Than On Android

In this day and age, smartphone owners can be sorted into two basic groups: Android users and iOS users. Sure, there are some people out there who still choose to use a Microsoft powered mobile device, but they are very, very few. Now when it comes to smart speakers, it turns out that the choice of OS is as equally shared, too, at least according to a survey recently conducted by securities intelligence firm Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP).

What CIRP did was reach out to some 300 users Amazon Echo and Google Home back in July earlier this year. The results of the survey reveal that 55 percent of owners of Amazon Echo are iOS mobile users, while the remaining 45 percent possess Android powered mobile devices. Of course, CIRP also made sure to ask Google Home owners the same thing, and it appears that 75 percent of them are Android users.

As pointed out by Josh Lowitz, partner and co-founder of CIRP, the survey indicates that the proportion of iPhone device users among Amazon Echo owners was greater than the Apple smartphone’s share of the mobile market in the United States, which is at around 34 percent. What about the proportion of Android device users among Google Home owners? It was pretty much on par with Android’s share in America, which is at about 55 percent. To put these numbers into context, it seems that iOS mobile users are more likely to view Google Home as a smart speaker that can only be used on the Android platform, and not anywhere else.

But it bears noting that the smart speaker market is still relatively new, at least when compared to the smartphone market. But the numbers should at least look good to Amazon. Sure, Apple currently has an iPhone customer base of more than 140 million people in America alone, while Amazon has only sold 15 million units of its Echo offering, which means that Amazon still has a long way to go. But CIRP’s survey does suggest that Amazon Echo clearly has appealed to Apple users, at least better than Android users.

Things could get more interesting, however, when the holiday shopping season arrives. Apple, after all, will be launching its Apple HomePod offering come wintertime, and it would be interesting to see how this will impact Amazon Home’s numbers. And don’t forget Google has just unveiled the Google Home Mini and the Google Home Max, too.
