T-Mobile Faces $60M Fine
After failing to “prevent and report unauthorized access to sensitive data” sometime in 2020-2021, T-Mobile is facing a hefty fine. And by hefty, we mean $60 million.
This was imposed by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US (CFIUS) after finding the wireless carrier had violated its mitigation agreement terms part of its 2020 Sprint acquisition.
The decision, announced on Thursday, was acknowledged by T-Mobile. It explained, however, that no data breach occurred. Instead, they encountered a technical issue that permitted unauthorized access to data. The wireless carrier shared that the glitch allowed “information shared from a small number of law enforcement information requests” within the law enforcement community. But the Un-carrier insisted that they reported and addressed the issue quickly.
This is, to date, the largest penalty that the CFIUS has imposed. It has jurisdiction over T-Mobile since the latter is primarily owned by Deutsche Telekom, a German entity.
