Verizon Reports Insider Data Breach from September 2023

Verizon recently shared its data breach notification that it filed at the Office of the Maine Attorney General. The document revealed that a Verizon employee gained access to an unauthorized file containing sensitive information of other employees.

The document also showed that the insider data breach took place on September 21, 2023. The employee gained access to almost half of the company’s workforce, which equaled around 63,206 employees. The information that was accessed included the following:

  • Full name

  • Physical address

  • Social Security number (SSN)

  • National ID

  • Gender

  • Union affiliation

  • Date of birth

  • Compensation information

Ever since Verizon discovered the breach, its internal security team has worked hard to ensure similar breaches can be prevented. To date, Verizon shares that there is no sign of malicious exploitation that could have leaked the data online.

"At this time, we have no evidence that this information has been misused or shared outside of Verizon as a result of this issue. We are working to ensure our technical controls are enhanced to help prevent this type of situation from reoccurring and are notifying applicable regulators about the matter."

The wireless carrier has also extended enrolled affected employees to its two-year identity theft protection and credit monitoring program.

The breach does not affect Verizon customers.
