Report: Is Amazon Planning a Mobile Service of Its Own?

Is Amazon venturing into the mobile space?

According to reports, the company has been in talks with US carriers to potentially offer mobile service under their networks.

The report says that Amazon could be offering this mobile service to its Prime members for free or at rock-bottom prices. If it is added to the subscription, the service could cost at least $10 per month.

Unfortunately, The Verge reported that a spokesperson for Amazon has denied the rumor.

“We are always exploring adding even more benefits for Prime members, but don’t have plans to add wireless at this time.” - Bradley Mattinger

CNET says that Verizon and T-Mobile have denied speaking with Amazon about using their networks. Meanwhile, AT&T and Dish initially declined to leave a comment on the topic. But in a follow-up email, AT&T’s Jim Greer said:

“AT&T is not in discussions with Amazon to resell wireless services.”

Since nothing has been confirmed for now, we’ll have to take this report with a grain of salt. If indeed Amazon’s plans to launch a mobile service succeeds, it could be a few months before they launch it anyway. But then again, it’s also possible that the plan will not materialize, especially if negotiations will not be successful.
